Why "Just Be Yourself" Is Terrible Advice (And What Works Instead)

“Just be yourself” is the most common dating advice in the world, and it’s almost useless in practice. It assumes the problem is that you’re pretending to be someone else — but for most guys, the real problem isn’t authenticity, it’s a lack of specific, practical skill.

The Advice Isn’t Wrong, It’s Incomplete

Being genuine does matter — pretending to be someone you’re not is exhausting and eventually falls apart. But “be yourself” skips the actual question: which version of yourself? The nervous, over-apologetic version, or the relaxed, engaged version you are with close friends? Both are “you.” The goal isn’t inventing a new personality — it’s showing up as the most relaxed, present version of the one you already have.

What to Do Instead

Rather than chasing vague authenticity, work on specific, learnable pieces: how you start conversations, how you carry yourself physically, how you listen. These are skills, not personality traits, and skills improve with practice regardless of how “naturally confident” you consider yourself.

Authenticity Comes After Competence, Not Before

Ironically, you’ll feel most like “yourself” once these skills feel automatic enough that you’re not thinking about them anymore — the same way a good conversationalist isn’t consciously performing, they’ve just practiced enough that it flows. Skip the vague advice. Work the specific skills, and the authenticity takes care of itself.
