What to Talk About When You Run Out of Things to Say

Running out of things to say mid-conversation happens to everyone, and it’s rarely as catastrophic as it feels in the moment. Having a few reliable directions ready takes the pressure off having to improvise from nothing.
Ask About Plans, Not Just the Past
Most early conversation defaults to the past — where you grew up, what you studied. Shifting toward the near future (“any trips planned this year?” “anything you’re looking forward to?”) often opens fresher territory that hasn’t already been covered.
Ask for an Opinion on Something Small
Low-stakes opinion questions — favorite way to spend a weekend, most overrated food, a show everyone loves that they don’t — tend to produce more personality-revealing answers than factual questions, and they’re easy to build on.
Let Silence Sit for a Second Before Filling It
Not every pause needs to be immediately filled. A brief silence often isn’t as awkward as it feels to you in the moment, and rushing to fill it with the first thing that comes to mind can lead to a weaker topic than if you’d taken an extra second to think of a better one.
Running dry isn’t a sign the date is going badly — it’s just a normal rhythm. Having two or three reliable directions ready keeps you from freezing when it happens.
