How to Talk About Exclusivity Without Making It Awkward

The conversation about becoming exclusive tends to loom larger in anticipation than it actually is in practice — a lot of guys avoid it far longer than necessary out of fear it’ll feel like a big, awkward negotiation.

Bring It Up Directly, Not Through Hints

Dropping hints and waiting for her to bring it up first tends to create more ambiguity, not less. A direct, low-pressure statement of where you’re at (“I’ve really been enjoying this, and I’d like to see where it goes just between us”) is clearer and, counterintuitively, less awkward than circling the topic indirectly.

Timing Matters More Than Wording

There’s more anxiety about finding the perfect phrasing than the conversation actually warrants — timing (having spent enough time together to have a real basis for the conversation) matters more than the specific words you use.

Be Genuinely Ready for Either Answer

Approaching the conversation only being open to one outcome adds pressure that the other person will likely pick up on. Being genuinely at peace with either answer tends to make the actual conversation go more smoothly, since it removes the underlying tension.

This conversation is almost always less dramatic in reality than it feels in anticipation. A direct, calm approach handles it better than an elaborately planned one.
