How Often Should You Text Before the First Date?

The stretch of texting between getting a number and the first date is its own small skill — too little contact and momentum fades, too much and there’s nothing left to talk about in person.
Frequency Matters Less Than Quality
Rather than aiming for a specific number of texts per day, focus on whether each exchange is actually adding something — a genuine question, a bit of back-and-forth, something worth responding to. A few meaningful exchanges beat a constant, low-effort stream.
Don’t Exhaust the Conversation Before You Meet
If you notice you’re running out of things to talk about over text before you’ve even met in person, that’s a sign to suggest meeting up sooner rather than continuing to text just to keep contact going. Save some conversational territory for in person.
Match Her Pace as a Rough Guide
If she’s initiating and responding quickly, that’s a reasonable signal you can text a bit more. If her responses are shorter or slower, dialing back slightly and letting her set more of the pace is usually the better read than pushing harder.
There’s no universal right frequency — the better question is whether the texting is building toward an actual date or just becoming a substitute for one.
