First Date Etiquette: The Small Things That Matter Most

When people think about first date etiquette, they usually think about big things — where to go, what to say. In practice, a handful of small, easy-to-overlook details often shape the overall impression more than the big planned parts.

Be on Time, Genuinely

Showing up late, even by a few minutes, sends a signal before the date has even started. If you’re running behind, a quick text saying so goes a long way toward not starting the date on the wrong foot.

Put the Phone Away Completely

Even glancing at your phone briefly communicates distraction. Putting it fully away — silent, out of sight — for the duration of the date is one of the simplest, highest-impact things you can do.

Be Kind to Everyone in the Room

How you treat a server, a barista, or anyone else you interact with during the date tells her far more about your character than anything you say directly to her. It’s one of the most reliable “tells” people look for, consciously or not.

None of these require charisma or cleverness — just basic attentiveness. Get the small things right, and you’ve already avoided most of what actually derails first dates.
